In many cases it's like starting over, especially if you are on your ex-spouse’s group health insurance plan; now, you must decide whether to remain on the plan through COBRA or to create your own plan for health insurance coverage that focuses on the premiums, benefits and networks you want.

Insurance Plans to Consider

Individual health insurance: This is an insurance policy for an individual or family, purchased independently with the help of an insurance agent. When choosing individual insurance, there are many different types of plans to review, including:

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

Point of Service (POS)

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)

Each of these plans will give the policyholder many different options in terms of doctors they can visit, premium costs, co-payments, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses. Your agent can help you decide which plan best suits your lifestyle and your existing medical history.

COBRA through a former spouse’s group insurance policy: After divorce, a former spouse can remain on their ex’s group insurance through COBRA for up to 36 months. However, during this time, they will be expected to pay an additional charge for administrative fees and they will be restricted to only those coverage options afforded in the group insurance policy. For example, if the group insurance policy is an HMO plan, the ex-spouse will be restricted to only visiting those physicians and medical facilities covered within the HMO network. If they decide to go out of network, they will not be provided any benefits or discounts. This kind of restriction is uncomfortable for many and as a newly divorced individual, it may not be representative of the freedom of choice that you now want to enjoy.

Other group coverage: If your employer offers group health insurance coverage, you can take part but remember, as with COBRA from your ex’s group insurance, you will be limited in the benefits you get and networks you can access.

It's important that you take your choice of health insurance plans seriously. If you're not sure where to begin or what might be the best option for you, give us a call. We can work together to develop a plan that has a network of physicians you're comfortable with, prices you can afford and flexibility that you want.

Reading that, you might think it means that insurers won’t issue an auto insurance policy to you if you are a high-risk driver, but that’s not true. An experienced agent can help you find insurers that will make it possible for you to get insurance and submit your SR-22.

Who is High Risk?

There is no single factor that may make an individual driver high risk. An insurer could consider any of the following to meet that definition:

Elderly drivers

Young drivers

Drivers with a history of accidents

Drivers with a history of traffic violations

Drivers with a suspended license

Drivers with a DUI or DWI

Drivers who’ve repetitively driven without coverage

Qualifying for a Policy

One of the keys to getting a policy when you’re high risk is working with an agent who has access to multiple carriers, including non-standard carriers, and is familiar with the underwriting standards of each. That agent will know which insurers are less likely to offer a policy based on your specific history and, in turn, which are more likely to.

The best ways for you to make this process easier for your agent:

Fully disclose your driving history

Let them know what you’ve done to become a better driver and prevent a repeat of old mistakes

Take a driving class

Keep your record clean

SR-22 Filings

If you are required to submit proof of insurance through an SR-22 filing, your agent can assist you with that for however many years you are required to submit it.

Keeping the Insurance

As a high-risk driver, getting insurance is just half the battle. You also need to maintain your insurance so you can keep your vehicle on the road. In order to retain your policy:

Pay premiums in full and on time

Send back any bi-annual or annual renewal documents by the deadline

Maintain a clean driving record

If you’re ready to start exploring your Austin car insurance options, contact an agent at Citizens Insurance today. That means that an insurance company has many responsibilities toward their policyholders. In turn, policyholders must promise full and honest disclosure and timely premium payments.

So you know what your responsibilities are, but what exactly are your insurance carrier’s?

Pay claims in a timely manner. The whole point of having an insurance policy is so that your claims will be paid and you will be made whole after a qualified loss following an insurable incident. In order to have the money for claims, insurers must put money away into reserves. Claims are generally unexpected and—with some types of insurance—can affect hundreds or thousands of insurance holders all at once.

Charge appropriate and fair rates. Insurance actuaries analyze the experience of various groups and determine the likelihood of claims based on these experiences. This knowledge allows them to develop rate schedules that are sufficient enough to pay insurance company expenses as well as claims.

Remain financially secure. Insurance companies need to continue marketing and bringing on new clients. They also need to have actuaries continually working on rate schedules all while having customer service staff trained and ready so they can keep existing clients happy. All of this works toward bringing in money that the insurance company needs to offset risk and pay claims.

Investigate claims. When the insurance company is defrauded out of money on invalid claims it doesn’t just hurt them, it hurts you. They must put a system in place to examine all claims and reduce the amount of fraud that occurs. That way, money isn’t paid out on fraudulent claims that could have been paid towards actual damages.

Adjust to new regulations. Insurance is a highly regulated industry Not only that, it is regulated by each state. This may be hard for carriers to integrate, but integrate they must.

Your premiums not only work toward ensuring that you get your claims paid, they also help the insurance company do all the things they need to in order to offer you reliable protection. When you work with us on fulfilling your insurance needs, we can help you find the right insurer to help you minimize your cost and maximize your protection.

Do you have a vehicle that you use for that business? If you say yes to both, then you should purchase a commercial car insurance policy. This will help to safeguard your business from the financial losses in the event a damaged commercial vehicle.

Many business owners aren’t sure what to consider a vehicle and what to consider equipment when it comes time to get the proper insurance coverage. Here are some tips on how you can tell the difference.

6 Most Common Vehicles Insured

You can insure almost any kind of vehicle under your commercial vehicle policy. Here is a list of some of the most common vehicles insured:

Private passenger vehicles – As long as the car is used for business purposes, a private passenger vehicle can be covered.

Delivery vehicles – This might include vans, trucks, cars, motorcycles—even scooters, anything you can deliver with.

Trucks – Any type of truck can be added to your policy including dump trucks, panel trucks, or tow trucks.

Trailers – Trailers are actually considered vehicles and can be covered.

Buses – You can protect these with your commercial vehicle policy even if you use the bus for private charters or daily passenger transportation,

Certain earth moving equipment – Not all earth moving equipment qualifies for coverage, but some do, so contact your agent to find out for sure.

Vehicles Not Covered - Some aircraft and marine vehicles may not be covered under a commercial vehicle policy. Instead, you’ll have to purchase watercraft or aviation policies.

Vehicles by Ownership Status - It is possible to insure a business vehicle that you hold the title for, but you don’t need to completely own a vehicle before adding it to your commercial car policy. You can insure leased vehicles, hired or rented vehicles and in some cases, even vehicles that you borrowed for the purpose of your business.

4 Main Coverage Types

As you now understand that wide range of vehicles can be covered by your commercial car insurance policy, it is necessary to contemplate what types of coverage to get. A car insurance policy—whether it’s commercial or personal—can offer many different types of protections with different deductibles and limits for each. These coverage types include:

Bodily injury liability

Collision coverage

Property damage liability

Uninsured motorist coverage

If you are still unsure as to whether or not your company’s property qualifies as a vehicle or equipment, contact your local agent for a Austin commercial car insurance quote and to help you pick the right coverages, limits and deductibles for you business.
</a10:content>

Austin Car Insurance

Austin car insurance can be difficult to understand.
Austin, Texas

Austin is the capital city of the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Travis County. Located in Central Texas on the eastern edge of the American Southwest, it is the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 14th most populous city in the United States. It was the third-fastest-growing large city in the nation from 2000 to 2006. Austin has a population of 790,390 (2010 U.S. Census). The city is the cultural and economic center of the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area, which has a population of over 1,716,291 (2010 U.S. Census), making it the 35th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The area was settled in the 1830s on the banks of the Colorado River by pioneers who named the village Waterloo. In 1839, Waterloo was chosen to become the capital of the newly independent Republic of Texas. The city was renamed after Stephen F. Austin, known as the father of Texas. The city grew throughout the 19th century and became a center for government and education with the construction of the Texas State Capitol and the University of Texas. After a lull in growth from the Great Depression, Austin resumed its development into a major city in the 1980s and emerged as a center for technology and business. Austin is home to many companies, high-tech and otherwise: Fortune 500 corporations Freescale Semiconductor, Forestar Group, and Whole Foods Market, are headquartered there; AMD, Apple, Broadcom, Google, IBM, Intel, Qualcomm, ShoreTel, Synopsys and Texas Instruments have prominent regional offices there. Also Dell's Worldwide Headquarters is located in nearby Round Rock, a suburb of Austin.
This means the insurance company may choose to take action to recover the amount of a claim paid to a covered insured if the loss was caused by a third party. After expenses, the amount recovered must be divided proportionately with the insured to cover any deductible for which the insured was responsible.

To provide further explanation - in the event you are involved in an accident that is not your fault, your insurance company may agree to pay your claim, but not until you agree to assign your rights to sue the at-fault party. Subrogation is the process by which you sign over your rights to sue to your insurance company. This will allow your insurance company to pay your claim and pursue reimbursement from the negligent party.

Subrogation is common in auto insurance. As an example, suppose you were hit by an uninsured motorist. If you carried uninsured motorist or collision coverage on your policy, you could file the claim with your own insurance company, thus avoiding the hassle of suing the uninsured driver for the damages. At this point though, you are the only one that has the right to sue the uninsured driver, as you were the one they caused damage to. The uninsured driver did not hit your insurance company, they hit you. Your insurance company at this time does not have the right to sue them for the accident.

Therefore, as a condition of receiving payment from your company, you will be required to sign over your right to sue to the insurance company. This signed statement will then give your insurance company the right to sue the uninsured driver and collect the damages. This process will allow you to receive payment from your insurance company now for the claim and will allow your insurance company to recoup the amount of money they paid you for the claim from the at fault driver at a later time. It is a win-win for both you and your insurance company.
Luckily, there are numerous ways to save money on insurance premiums. Here are some suggestions to help you get the coverage you need at a price you can afford:

Stick with the same insurance company: Everyday, insurance companies send out messages and commercials to vie for your business. To encourage customers to buy all of their insurance in the same place, they will often provide discounts for people who hold multiple policies with them. Be sure to let your insurance agent know of any existing coverage you have while you shop so he or she can help you take advantage of these multi-policy discounts.

Discuss deductibles: A higher deductible generally means a lower insurance premium because it shows that you are accepting some of the potential risk of a claim. But only choose a deductible that you can afford—otherwise, you might not be able to carry the cost when an insurable event actually occurs.

Have your current policy on-hand: When switching insurance carriers, know what your current insurance deductibles, coverage options, limits and premiums are. This will help you avoid becoming over or under-insured with your new policy and will help you determine an appropriate premium for your budget and needs.

Choose appropriate limits: Limits on your insurance policies represent the maximum amounts that an insurer might need to pay if you have a qualifying insurable event. When you over insure your home, car or life, you create limits that are higher than necessary that bring on a premium expense that is wasteful. Instead, be sure to choose appropriate limits that will help make you whole after an event.

Make use of riders: Riders are additional benefits that can be added to certain insurance contracts. For instance, in life insurance—instead of buying separate policies for your spouse or children—you can add riders that provide a death benefit in the event that they pass away before you do. Riders are generally less expensive than individual policies but make sure you understand how they work before you add them to your policy.

The best way to get an accurate and affordable insurance quote is to work with your agent and offer him or her full disclosure on your life and needs. An Insurance agent is your best resource in finding the premiums you can afford in a policy that doesn’t compromise benefits.

Coverage does not extend to household members and only applies to the person listed on the declarations page. In the event of an accident, the non-owner policy is designed to pay after the car policy coverage is exhausted. Therefore, it is designed to be a secondary policy. For these reasons, a non-owner policy is not designed for teenagers that want to be covered when driving their parents’ car. If an accident occurs and it is the teenager’s fault, the parent’s primary policy will not provide coverage, as the teenager is not covered. The non-owner policy only provides coverage for the teen. Therefore, the parent’s interests are not protected in this scenario.

Non owner policies were designed for a person that does not own any vehicle and does not have regular access to a particular vehicle, including work related vehicles. Additionally, you cannot add any drivers to this type of policy. Only the named insured (the person who was issued the policy) will have coverage.

Usually, coverage is not provided for any of the following:

Vehicles registered to the policyholder.

Vehicles that are work related or are non-private passenger type vehicles.

Vehicles owned by residents of your household.

If you own a vehicle, non-owner car insurance is not the type of car insurance you should purchase. It only protects you when you are driving a vehicle in which you have no ownership of any kind.

It is also important to know that if you acquire an automobile after purchasing a non-owner policy, you must add that vehicle immediately after acquisition and pay any additional premium if applicable. Many people will purchase a vehicle and forget to add it to their policy thinking that the vehicle is insured.
Instead, commercial auto insurance might be the better choice, limiting your liability and offering more comprehensive coverage.

Difference between Commercial and Personal Auto Insurance

As you can probably tell, commercial auto insurance and personal auto insurance differ because one is meant to cover your commercial (or business) automobile or fleet and the other your personal automobile. But the difference is actually more than that. Personal auto insurance covers insurable events like the bodily injury of you, your passenger, or another driver. It also covers collision costs, uninsured motorist claims, theft of your personal assets and property damage liability when caused by your personal vehicle.

Commercial auto insurance has a different set of liabilities to cover. For example, let’s say that the passenger in your car is not just a friend or family member along for a ride somewhere—as it would be in a personal vehicle—but a client that is paying you to drive them to a certain location. Or, let’s say that your vehicle is stolen not just with your personal DVD’s and laptop in it, but expensive business equipment owned by your client that you were meant to transport somewhere. In both of these examples, not only are the cost of the missing goods or injuries going to be part of the claim, but the loss of use and loss of business caused by the interruption by the insurable incident and subsequent repair of your car could play a major role in the impact of the claim. Additionally, the liability you as the business owner carry as the responsible party to your client’s goods is also much greater than the personal liability involved in losing a few DVDs.

The liabilities and potential expense of claims can be quite different depending on whether you have a business vehicle or a personal vehicle. Imagine if you have employees driving your commercial vehicles while on the clock? Your personal auto insurance policy will not cover claims and their personal coverage may not either, which leaves your business exposed.

Why Buy Commercial Auto Insurance?

If you buy a personal auto insurance policy on a business-owned vehicle, it is possible that your future claims could be denied making the policy completely useless. The reason for this is that when an insurance company underwrites, prices and issues your policy they must be able to do so with full access to all the facts of the situation. If you present to them a low-risk personal situation, then they are going to price and issue your policy accordingly. But with a commercial vehicle you actually present a completely different set of risks and different expenses. These risks and expenses need to be honestly considered by the insurer and when you present a business automobile as a personal automobile they cannot be. It may even be considered fraudulent activity to attempt to do so.

Additionally, insurance is meant to provide protection of your assets from claims. When you buy a personal auto insurance policy you are protecting your personal assets. Your business has a completely different set of assets and different asset value to cover. A denied claim resulting from the purchase of the wrong type of auto coverage could ruin your business. Buying a commercial auto policy for your business property is the right option to get the right financial protection for your business.

Commercial Auto Insurance Coverage Options

Commercial auto insurance offers many of the same coverage options as a personal insurance policy. You can opt for uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, liability and physical damage coverage. These options may sound similar to those that you get with a personal policy but they are structured and priced so that they can provide the protection, deductibles and limits you need for your business.

Pricing Commercial Auto Insurance

Rates for commercial auto insurance can vary and are based on many of the same factors as your personal auto insurance, including your driving history, type of vehicle and credit rating. But commercial (Business) insurers also must consider how many employees will have access to the vehicles, who may ride in the vehicles, what you use the vehicles for, how often the vehicles are driven and what kind of mileage is put on them. Each of these factors will be weighted against the others so that your underwriter can develop a specific quote for your individual commercial auto insurance needs.

Remember, It is about buying coverage that will protect your unique situation against the risks you face on a daily basis. The only way to make sure you have the right protection is to buy the right policy and to be completely forthright with your insurer. Citizens Insurance Agency offers personal auto insurance and commercial (business) auto insurance. Contact us today! 325-597-4222

Every state has a minimum amount of liability coverage that drivers are required to carry, but your insurance agent will likely also offer you several ancillary or add-on coverages that are optional. Some are worth adding and some are rarely worth the extra cost. Here are five add-ons that you should investigate when buying auto insurance.

1. Gap Insurance
Gap insurance protects you in the event that you owe more money on the vehicle than the insurance company will pay you. Insurance companies use standard valuation measures to determine what your car was worth at the time of the accident; that's the amount they will pay to you. However, if you financed or leased your car, you may owe more on the loan or lease than what the insurance company gives you. This is the gap and, if it is not insured, it can cost you money out-of-pocket if you get into an accident.

The gap is greatest when you first drive a brand new car off the lot as its book value depreciates very drastically. However, after two to three years, the rate of depreciation levels off and the lease or loan payments may catch up to it, making the gap disappear. Consider adding on gap insurance on a new car purchase and then dropping it in a few years.

2. Roadside Assistance
Roadside assistance consists of mobile repair and towing services if your car breaks down on the road. Mechanics are equipped to change tires, fill up an empty tank and assess mechanical problems. If they are unable to fix the problem on the side of the road, they will tow the vehicle to the nearest repair facility. This is an important service to have, especially if you often travel alone or with children. If you have roadside assistance through other means, such as AAA coverage or benefits on your credit card account, you will not need to sign up for it with your insurance policy. However, if you do not have it already, it is a worthwhile add-on. (For related reading, see 10 Car Insurance Myths.)

3. Vanishing Deductible
This feature is something that is becoming commonly offered as part of premium auto insurance policies. When you are comparing policies between companies, it is a benefit worth having. Vanishing deductible reduces your deductible by a certain amount (usually $50-$100) at the beginning of the policy and then the same amount annually until it reaches zero. Deductibles drop as long as you maintain a clean driving record and have no accidents. If you have an accident, you pay the lower amount rather than your original deductible. More companies are adding this benefit as time goes on so do your homework and check around.

4. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
PIP insurance covers a variety of expenses in the event of an accident, depending on the policy. The main costs it covers are medical expenses for the insured driver, her family and other passengers up to a certain dollar amount. In no-fault insurance states, PIP is required as there is no recovery of medical expenses from the other driver. PIP may also cover funeral or loss-of-income expenses. While your health insurance policy may cover some of these expenses, PIP can fill in and make up for co-pays and deductibles.

5. Uninsured Motorist Coverage
If you do not live in a no-fault state, you run the risk of being hit by an uninsured motorist, in which case, there is no insurance to cover you. This is the purpose of uninsured motorist coverage. Your own policy will kick in rather than having to sue the other driver and spend copious amounts of time in court. Most standard policies add this coverage in but many discount insurance policies do not. Check your current coverage carefully.

The Bottom Line
There are many bells and whistles available when buying auto insurance. Many of them are unnecessary in most situations and will simply drain money out of your pocket. But there are several that are worth adding on to make sure that you are adequately protected in the event of a car accident.
</a10:content>

How to Compare Car Insurance Rates and Policies

If you are looking for a new car insurance policy, your first instinct is probably to compare insurance premiums in order to make sure that you get the best deal on your policy. But comparing rates alone will not give you a good indication of which policy is more cost effective, reliable and better suited to your overall needs. Use this list to help you narrow own your choices for all the reasons you should consider, not just price.

1. Compare coverage options.

Check out the coverage options for all the different policies you have gotten quotes for. Make sure they are comparable and that they offer you the protection that is most important to you. This may mean they only consist of state-required coverages or that they include additional protections like uninsured motorist coverage.

2. Compare deductibles and limits.

Policy premiums will vary, especially if you set different limits and deductibles on each. It isn’t a fair comparison to put an inexpensive policy with high deductibles and low limits up against one with low deductibles and high limits. So when you do your comparisons, make sure the deductibles and limits on each policy, for each coverage option, are similar.

3. Compare A.M. Best ratings.

An insurance policy is only as good as the company that issues it. When comparing two different policies from two different companies, don’t just focus on price, deductibles and coverages; take a look at the A.M. Best rating for each company to make sure they are equal in terms of financial stability.

4. Compare customer service and payment options.

If you like to do business online, make sure that the insurance companies you are looking at have that capability. If you prefer to talk on the phone, make sure they can do that. Also, check out their different payment options (online, automatic draft, check, etc.) and choose the policies from those companies that have what you are looking for.

5. Compare rates.

Now that you’ve made sure that you have several similar policies from different companies, it’s time to actually look at the rates and compare them. Be sure to check out all premium types—the annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly so that you get a good idea of the differences.

Once you’ve compared all these items and narrowed down your choices, you should finally come up with the policy that meets most, if not all, of your criteria.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “this is an insurance agency, so of course they’re talking optimistically about insurance companies!” But honestly I believe in insurance! Kind of crazy I know, but last month I was in my first wreck, nothing big but at the time I thought I was a goner. I was fine; the other guy was fine, but my car- not so much. What ended up being $7000 in damage costs me $500. So, my monthly premium of $130 actually ended up benefiting me in the end. Even though I gripe about it when I see it hit my account every month, its way better than $7000!

Texas car insurance rates are not set or controlled by us. In fact most agents I talk with about it do not even mention it to their clients. Now the point of this is not to talk about student discounts; it is in fact an article about agents getting comfortable and not doing the best job for you. The discounts we are presented with to save you on Texas auto insurance are vast. To name a few you would not suspect there are: Advance quoting discounts, meaning put the effective date 10 days in advance you may save 10%. Agents do not like this because they do not want to take the chance of loosing your business. We believe it is offering car insurance discounts like this that create loyalty and appreciation among our clients. There is a discount just for giving them your email address. I do not know about you but I will happily save $50 for getting an email telling me when my bill is do. I get allot worse without being compensated for it. Discount for owning your home, discount for having airbags, seatbelts, and an alarm system.
Texas citizens do this by purchasing Texas car insurance. Car insurance in Texas pays to repair or replace the other driver’s car and pays other people’s medical expenses when you are at fault in an accident.

You must carry at least the minimum amount of Car Insurance coverage required by the Texas financial responsibility law. Texas minimum liability limits were $25,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. This basic coverage is called 25/50/25 coverage. Texas Car insurance limits increased on January 1, 2011, to $30,000 for each injured person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. The new Car Insurance limits may be seen as 30/60/25.

Because of new vehicle prices and the rising cost of medical care, the minimum amounts might not be enough if you cause an accident. If your Texas Car insurance limits are too low to pay for all of the other driver’s costs, the driver may sue you to collect the difference. To protect yourself financially, we recommend buying more than the basic limits. Consider buying liability limits seen as 50/100/50 or higher. When you compare quotes on Car insurance Texas .com, We set the default limits of coverage to 50/100/50 for you. They can be changed easily upon your request.
